Acupuncture is one of several therapies used in the healing system of Chinese Medicine. It has a 2,000-year old written history in China, but dates back before human history was recorded. It is commonly practiced throughout East-Asia, though historical evidence shows variations of acupuncture in the ancient Americas as well.

The ancient Chinese first mapped pathways along the body through which “qi” travels (the closest translation for “qi” is “vital energy.”) They found that illness occurred when the qi flow was interrupted in these energy pathways. By inserting extremely fine needles in specific points along the pathways, the smooth flow of qi is re-established and organ functions are regulated. This can help relax muscles, reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and soothe the mind and heart.

  • BROWN SUGAR: Yoga for Folks of Color 2 hours $33.00 Book Now
    $20 - $45* Sliding Scale
No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

What: Brown Sugar is a healing space. It's a space where people of color can move, breathe and circle together as we explore mindfulness practices and celebrate our diverse community. Brown Sugar is a body-positive, queer friendly space.

How: We begin and end each class in a circle where we can share and reflect upon our experiences. As we move through the yoga postures with awareness, healthy alignment, and a focus on the breath, we begin to attune to our own and our collective wisdom.

Why: Because folks of color need a healing space where they don't have to worry about being "othered". Because racism exists, within the world and within the yoga community. Because people of color are hugely underrepresented in yoga studios, so we're letting it be known that there's a space there for us too.

Who: Taught by an experienced POC teacher, the magic of this class is created by the energy of each person who enters this sacred space. All experience levels, sizes, abilities, genders, and ages are welcome.

With the teamwork of the young lords, black panthers and allies, Dr. Shakur developed what is called today the NADA PROTOCOL.This big payback (homage to one of the most revered musicians James Brown whose music wasplayed as a break beat by hip hop dj's leading to a revival of his music) is intended to be an opportunity for participants to receive the NADA PROTOCOL and be charged with going back into their/our community and treating fellows.

Inversion practice is at the heart of Hatha Yoga. Of shoulderstand, B.K.S. Iyengar said “Sarvangasana is one of the greatest boons conferred on humanity by our ancient sages.” Inversions are rejuvenating and invigorating; they strengthen our spine and heart, promote clarity of mind, balance our hormones and bring out the playful child in each of us. These are poses that require dedication, self-trust and a willingness to face our fears. Often in fast-paced yoga classes, we do not have enough time or space to dig into these challenging poses. In this hands-on workshop, Alicia Allison will present the benefits of regular practice of handstand, headstand and shoulderstand and will guide you through the precise and safe alignment of each pose. • Learning from and Listening to our Senses: A physical meditation practice 1 hour 15 minutes $0.00 Book Now
As our relationships and engagements with phones, computers, and other forms of visually demanding technology increase in our daily lives, I find the need to search for a way to reset, to reclaim my vision for its many other capacities beyond those of reading and looking for the express purposes of identifying, interpreting and discriminating one image from the next. How can we employ our vision without seeing? Through guided but open-ended structures and meditations, we will attempt to temporarily let go of a need to see as we put our other senses to work. We will look at and discuss the anatomy of the eyes and other sensory organs, refine the perception of our other sense organs, and discuss the role our intuition and imagination play in what and how we see. We will see how we can re-engage and repurpose our vision as a collaborating sense rather than a dominant one, exploring all of our senses as guides for engagement with the practice of healthy communication between our ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ selves, and between ourselves and our communities.
  • Mindfulness and Movement for Pain 2 hours $32.00 Book Now
    *Sliding Scale $20-$45*

This workshop is for anyone with acute or chronic pain, or those who wish to be in themselves with kindness when pain arises. Laura will share her own explorations into meditation, yoga, and mind-body practices as a way to support and facilitate students’ own healing processes. She believes healing begins from a foundation of self-trust and self-compassion. Often, those of us with chronic pain cannot find a place in traditional yoga classes. Teachers work hard to fix our pain, or to get us to fix it ourselves, or they preach messages of universal bliss that don't resonate with our pain, which can leave us with the sense that "something is wrong with me". This workshop seeks to create a safe space for us to cultivate trust in our own knowing, treat our wounds with patience, and affirm our wholeness in the midst of our struggling. We'll explore a variety of mindfulness practices, from simple breath relaxation to metta (lovingkindness) meditation. We'll also experiment with some gentle asana (yoga postures) and movement with props and adaptations for any body. There will be opportunity for reflection and discussion, and Laura will offer insights from both neuroscience and Buddhist practices on relating to physical pain. This workshop is deeply aligned with Third Root's vision of a world where "we all belong, we are all healing, and we are all welcome in our wholeness".
No yoga experience necessary; not limited to those currently experiencing physical pain. This workshop is a continuation of those offered in Mar. and April, and is currently offered May 13 and June 3.Students are encouraged (but not required) to attend multiple workshops to support their ongoing pain management process and build connections with others who share similar challenges.
  • Monday Night Sangha: Meditation & Mindfulness Studies 1 hour 15 minutes $0.00 Book Now
This weekly class is organized thematically around Buddhist & Yogic philosophy & mythology. Each guided class offers techniques and wisdom for practice on and off the cushion. Group discussion is largely generated by participants, and community building is an important aspect of any "Sangha" (Pali & Sanskrit word for community). Meditation practices are incorporated into every session. This is an on-going class, feel free to drop-in or stay for series which change monthly. No prior knowledge is necessary. All are welcome. Suggested Donation $20.

The practice of yoga springs out of a 5000-10,000 year old ever evolving tradition. Mythology has been a key but often overlooked part of this tradition. Asana (the yoga poses) are filled with mythic references —Shiva Nataraja, Hanumanasana, Vasisthasana to name a few. Who are Shiva, Hanuman and Vasistha? What is some history and context of our asana practice in modern life in the West? Ahern did not grow up with these cultural references here in the US. These questions led her into her scholarly pursuit of completing an advanced teacher training in yoga mythology with Greek, Latin and Sanskrit scholar Emily Stone and Sharon Rudy and continued studies with Douglas Brooks. Stemming out of an oral tradition, each myth has hundreds of versions without one singular author. Ahern welcomes alternate versions of these rich stories from participants in class.

  • Resilience for Changemakers: A restorative social justice mini-retreat 2 hours 30 minutes $36.00 Book Now
    ** $25 - $60 Sliding Scale - apply your rate upon arrival **
The future of our country and our world is at a tipping point. To transform the systems of extraction, exploitation, and violence that are destroying our planet and further harming the most marginalized communities, we need all hands on deck.

But we gotta still be here in order to make lasting change. Our own resilience is foundational to our strategy. As service providers, activists, caretakers, organizers, healers, and active community members, our psyches, spirits, and bodies must be cared for every step of the way - not sidelined until “after the work is done." Whether you’re new to social change, service, or healing work or have been at it for decades, we need you to be supported and in balance, so your nervous system can down-regulate from automatic stress response and create the space that is neurologically and biologically needed for creativity, stamina, and resilience.

    Any of this sound familiar?
    - Suppressing underlying anxiety, fear, rage, or grief through working harder, taking constant action, or only centering others' needs
    - Shame that turning off the news or social media, taking time off, or resting makes you complacent, privileged, or disengaged
    - Martyring your physical health, relationships, or personal goals for the sake of your work
    - The process of working for social justice is not feeling very liberatory and loving along the way, and is even complicit in replicating systems of oppression in some ways

    The good news:

We can work for change in a way that doesn't turn the evils of extraction, exploitation, and dehumanization in upon ourselves and each other.

You are invited to breathe, to inhabit your body, to imagine, and to be connected to a community of supportive peers in your changemaking work who see and care about you beyond the roles you play and the work you do.

    What we’ll do together:
    - Share simple healing practices you can take with you: meditation, embodied practice, song, essential oils, & more
    - Learn how systems of oppression are showing up in our our bodies, and what trauma and stress have to do with it
    - Explore practices we need to interrupt oppression from passing through us into the work and cultivate more resilience
    - Create a space of mutual care to be honest about our emotional realities and not have to perform hope, rep our current projects or campaigns, or hold the needs of others

All of the practices are completely accessible - no specific physical ability, supplies, experience, or exercise clothes needed!

Best of all, we build a community of support with changemakers who share our commitment to liberation & wellbeing along the way.
Who this is for: This workshop sits at the intersection of social change, peer support, and internal transformation. It serves a diverse group of organizers, healers, wellness practitioners, and newer activists ready to dive into the work of inner and outer change. As a facilitator I have anti-oppression and trauma-informed mindfulness and organizing training, and the workshop space strives to be inclusive and supportive of all gender expressions, sexual orientations, dis/abilities, racial identities, class backgrounds, and learning styles. Absolutely no previous experience with yoga, meditation, somatics, or anything of the sort is needed - come as you are!

  • The Hero's Journey: Meditation on the Monomyth 1 hour 15 minutes $0.00 Book Now
“ I don’t believe that people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive.”

    - Joseph Campbell

In his exhaustive study of world myths Joseph Campbell discovered that all are fundamentally the same story – retold endlessly in infinite variations. He found that all story-telling, consciously or not, follows the same ancient patterns, and that all stories, from parables and fables to literature or modern movies, can be understood in terms of a basic thematic and narrative structure - the hero’s journey or an all encompassing “Mono-myth.”

These themes and stations occur in every culture, in every time. The stories are as infinitely varied as every storyteller; and yet the basic form remains the same, an incredibly tenacious set of elements that spring in endless repetition, updated through the ages, told and retold, as humans reflect on our world through symbolic stories of our own lives and nature.

For six weeks, using examples from various cultures and eras, two stations of the hero’s journey will be discussed and considered in an effort to personalize and identify how such a structure might be active in our own lives; how to recognize a “call to adventure” or be brave enough to “cross the threshold” and face our greatest fears. Campbell’s work was primarily about uncovering self, facing adversity, and following bliss- how to move through adversity, claim your inner resources, and recognize an authentic self.

  • We Are the Strategy: Resilience Practices for Changemakers 2 hours 30 minutes $32.00 Book Now
    ~ A resilience & healing workshop for change makers~

How have you been feeling since the election?

    Like, honestly?

The future of our country and our world is at a tipping point. To transform the systems of extraction, exploitation, and violence that are destroying our planet and further harming the most marginalized communities, we need all hands on deck.

But we gotta still be here in order to make lasting change. Our own resilience is foundational to our strategy. Our pyches, spirits, and bodies must be cared for every step of the way, not sidelined until “after the work is done." We need you to be supported and in balance, so your nervous system can down-regulate from automatic stress response and create the space that is neurologically and biologically needed for creativity, stamina, and resilience.

    Any of this sound familiar?
    - Suppressing underlying anxiety, fear, rage, or grief through working harder or taking constant action
    - Shame that turning off the news or social media, taking time off, or resting makes you complacent, privileged, or disengaged
    - Martyring your physical health, relationships, or personal goals for the sake of the work
    - Lack of patience and frustration at others who are not showing up in the ways you think they should

    The good news:
We can totally work for change in a way that doesn't turn the evils of extraction, exploitation, and dehumanization in upon ourselves and each other.
You are invited to breathe, to inhabit your body, to imagine, and to be connected to a community of supportive peers in your changemaking work who see and care about you beyond the roles you play and the work you do.

    What we'll do together:
    - Create a space of mutual care to be honest about our emotional realities and not have to perform hope or rep our institutions/organizations or leadership positions
    - Learn how systems of oppression are showing up in our our bodies, and what trauma and grief have to do with it
    - Explore the boundaries and practices we'll need to interrupt oppression from passing through us into the work
    - Share simple healing practices you can take with you: meditation, body scan, essential oils, & more

Best of all, you'll build a community of support with change makers and leaders who share your commitment to well being and liberation along the way.

A hot stone massage combines thermotherapy with massage techniques to provide an effective

healing therapy.  The use of natural stones in conjunction with massage uses powerful earth

energies to help the patient heal.

Heat from stones also has the benefit of geomagnetism from an Earth source; which has a

balancing and healing effect on our systems.

Warm stones encourage the exchange of blood and lymph and provide soothing heat for deep-tissue work. They are also placed on specific points of the body, such as the back, abdomen or

legs during the massage. The localized placement of heat on a particular area increases

circulation of fluids, and can assist in alleviating organ congestion.Other benefits of Hot Stone

Massage can be a great healing for the brain and body by helping quiet anxiety and alleviate

stress, because the heat of stones helps to promote a deeper and focused state of relaxation.

The hot stones have a sedative effect that can relieve chronic pain.Along with the physical

benefits of stone massage there is also a kind of energy work that is involved which calms and

energizes the mind, body & spirit and incorporating something from nature such as stones,
