    Third Root is beginning a Secular Buddhist Studies Program on Monday nights with a talented pool of Buddhism and meditation teachers that resonate with the teaching styles and philosophy and style at Third Root! Each month will feature a pair of teachers for 4 consecutive Monday nights, and topics will change monthly. Each evening will feature a dharma talk, meditation, and a question and answer period.

    The class will begin in February, and take place every Monday from 8.15-9.30pm. The topic for February is the Four Noble Truths. $15 suggested donation.

    Be present in your life with whatever is going on this very moment.

    Everyone is welcome to sit in this Zazen meditation retreat. It will not be a guided guided practice, though instructions will be given beforehand for those who are new to the style.

    The afternoon will alternate between 25 minute periods of sitting, and 7 minute periods of walking meditations (Kinhin). There will also be half an hour of light community service work at the health center.

    After the session there will an opportunity to talk about your experience as a group and to have all your questions answered.

    Pilates was created in the 1940’s by German health and fitness expert Joseph Pilates. It quickly gained popularity amongst dancers, boxers, and gymnasts as a way for them to increase flexibility, build core strength, and tone key muscle groups.

    Engagement of “Powerhouse” muscles is at the foundation of all of the 24 classical moves.

    6 principles of Pilates:Concentration, Control, Centering, Flow, Precision, Breathing. These concepts will be discussed in depth during the workshop.

    The workshop will include talk on the history of Pilates, a presentation of the book Healthy Curvy- Love Your Shape, Lose the Weight- (Race and weight loss), Pilates health benefits, safety, and helpful dietary guidelines.A warm-up, 1 hour work out, cool down, and brief question and answer portion. Makeba began her career as a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor, she recently recertified as a Pilates instructor in 2013.

    This workshop is specifically designed for pairs—partners, friends, buddies, siblings, roommates or sweethearts—who want to explore new ways of practicing together.

    In this workshop, we will create a foundation by grounding ourselves individually, and then turning towards and connecting with our partners. Lezlie and Jacoby will guide you in a series of postures that will invite you to connect with yourself as well as to cultivate receptivity and mutual support between you and your buddy, partner, or friend. We will practice meditations, postures and flow together, as well as giving each other gentle massage and adjustments. Both partners will have an opportunity to give and receive during the session, and will be guided through the sequence step-by-step.

    No prior yoga experience is necessary. Comfortable clothes recommended. Bring your neighbor, loved one, comrade, or friend.

    In this workshop, we will explore an approach to downward-facing dog and sun salutations that allows areas of the torso – neck, shoulders, low back, and hips – to optimally align for health and safety.We will focus on the connection of breath and movement, and in particular, the use of the breath to find deep support from our abdominals and core stabilizing muscles.We will look at the structure and function of the spine, and how breath and core support can help us find length in our spine and ease in our movements.We will then break down each component part of the sun salutation, paying special attention to downward-facing dog, and applying our newfound knowledge and experience to these foundational poses.

    The workshop will include breathwork, guided imagery/meditation, strengthening exercises, working with each other, a slow flow asana yoga practice, anatomy pictures, and ample time for Q&A/discussion.Inspiration will be drawn from the teacher’s experience with Pilates, Alexander Technique, and Body-Mind-Centering, in addition to yoga.
