Acupuncture is one of several therapies used in the healing system of Chinese Medicine. It has a 2,000-year old written history in China, but dates back before human history was recorded. It is commonly practiced throughout East-Asia, though historical evidence shows variations of acupuncture in the ancient Americas as well.

The ancient Chinese first mapped pathways along the body through which “qi” travels (the closest translation for “qi” is “vital energy.”) They found that illness occurred when the qi flow was interrupted in these energy pathways. By inserting extremely fine needles in specific points along the pathways, the smooth flow of qi is re-established and organ functions are regulated. This can help relax muscles, reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and soothe the mind and heart.

  • BROWN SUGAR: Yoga for Folks of Color 2 hours $33.00 Book Now
    $20 - $45* Sliding Scale
No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

What: Brown Sugar is a healing space. It's a space where people of color can move, breathe and circle together as we explore mindfulness practices and celebrate our diverse community. Brown Sugar is a body-positive, queer friendly space.

How: We begin and end each class in a circle where we can share and reflect upon our experiences. As we move through the yoga postures with awareness, healthy alignment, and a focus on the breath, we begin to attune to our own and our collective wisdom.

Why: Because folks of color need a healing space where they don't have to worry about being "othered". Because racism exists, within the world and within the yoga community. Because people of color are hugely underrepresented in yoga studios, so we're letting it be known that there's a space there for us too.

Who: Taught by an experienced POC teacher, the magic of this class is created by the energy of each person who enters this sacred space. All experience levels, sizes, abilities, genders, and ages are welcome.

    * After careful consideration, the pricing structure for BSY going forward will be on a sliding scale from $20.00 - $45.00, as is the fee for most 2 hour workshops held at Third Root.No one will be turned away for lack of funds. This change is intended to allay some of the expense to the facilitators for supplies and location use in collaboration with Third Root while keeping the workshop financially accessible to the community.

  • Headstands 101: go upside down from the inside out! 2 hours $20.00 Book Now
This workshop explores the anatomy, mechanics and energetics of what master BKS Iyengar calls the "king" of all yoga poses: Sirsasana, headstand. If you have been hesitant to practice headstand on the fly, you are wise; the pose asks much of the muscles supporting the delicate cervical spine, and requires attentive entry and exit, a strong core and a good head on your shoulders. This approach encourages both caution and confidence. We will explore this powerful pose through lecture and movement, with a particular focus on strengthening and stabilizing the neck and core. There are many ways to experience headstand fully without necessarily embodying the "full expression" of the pose, so come curious and willing to play with multiple variations of this shape for an uplifting experience.

  • Inversion Lab: Refining the practice of going upside down 2 hours $45.00 Book Now
    **Sliding Scale $30 - $70**
A workshop on Adho Mukha Vrksasana, Salamba Sarvangasana & Salamba Sirsasana.
Inversion practice is at the heart of Hatha Yoga. Of shoulderstand, B.K.S. Iyengar said “Sarvangasana is one of the greatest boons conferred on humanity by our ancient sages.” Inversions are rejuvenating and invigorating; they strengthen our spine and heart, promote clarity of mind, balance our hormones and bring out the playful child in each of us. These are poses that require dedication, self-trust and a willingness to face our fears. Often in fast-paced yoga classes, we do not have enough time or space to dig into these challenging poses. In this hands-on workshop, Alicia Allison will present the benefits of regular practice of handstand, headstand and shoulderstand and will guide you through the precise and safe alignment of each pose. You will work with various props based on the principals of Iyengar Yoga.Modifications and refinements will be provided for intermediate through advanced practitioners; restorative and L-shaped versions will also be presented so that all practitioners can learn how to modify each pose for their unique body. All students will have space at a wall and a bolster for support in restorative work.

Limited Space (Max of 13 students), Please reserve your space in advance.

This is workshop is for students that are working at an Advanced Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced Level. (You do not need to be able to stand on your head to attend this workshop, however we recommend you have a practice for at least 6 months prior to attending).

This class is contraindicated for those with hypertension, glaucoma, detachment of the retina, severe nearsightedness, cervical spondylitis and cervical spine herniations.Inversions are contraindicated during menstruation. While some inversions are safe to practice when pregnant, this workshop is not ideal for prenatal students.
  • Monday Night Sangha: Meditation & Mindfulness Studies 1 hour 15 minutes $0.00 Book Now
This weekly class is organized thematically around Buddhist & Yogic philosophy & mythology. Each guided class offers techniques and wisdom for practice on and off the cushion. Group discussion is largely generated by participants, and community building is an important aspect of any "Sangha" (Pali & Sanskrit word for community). Meditation practices are incorporated into every session. This is an on-going class, feel free to drop-in or stay for series which change monthly. No prior knowledge is necessary. All are welcome. Suggested Donation $20.

The practice of yoga springs out of a 5000-10,000 year old ever evolving tradition. Mythology has been a key but often overlooked part of this tradition. Asana (the yoga poses) are filled with mythic references —Shiva Nataraja, Hanumanasana, Vasisthasana to name a few. Who are Shiva, Hanuman and Vasistha? What is some history and context of our asana practice in modern life in the West? Ahern did not grow up with these cultural references here in the US. These questions led her into her scholarly pursuit of completing an advanced teacher training in yoga mythology with Greek, Latin and Sanskrit scholar Emily Stone and Sharon Rudy and continued studies with Douglas Brooks. Stemming out of an oral tradition, each myth has hundreds of versions without one singular author. Ahern welcomes alternate versions of these rich stories from participants in class.

  • Yoga and Mindfulness for Pain and Injury 2 hours $32.00 Book Now
    *Sliding Scale $20-$45*

This workshop is for anyone currently struggling with acute or chronic pain, or anyone wishing to practice being in their bodies and with themselves with kindness when pain arises.I'll share my own explorations into yoga, meditation, and mind-body practices with others as a way to support and facilitate their own healing process - which begins with a sense of self-trust and self-compassion.So often, those of us with chronic pain and injury cannot find a place in traditional yoga or meditation classes because we constantly feel that "something is wrong with me" - teachers either work hard at trying to fix us, or getting us to fix ourselves, or they preach messages of universal light, revelation, and bliss that don't resonate with our inner experience. This compounds our physical pain with emotional pain. This workshop will create a safe space for us to cultivate trust in our own knowing, so often eroded by physical pain, and begin to treat our aches and wounds with lovingkindess and patience, rather than as signs of our failure or weakness as human beings. We'll use gentle asana, adapted for any physical ability using props such as chairs, blocks, the wall, etc., and we'll explore a variety of meditative practices, from simple diaphragmatic breathing relaxation to metta meditation. We'll also experiment with movement derived from Pilates, Alexander technique, and Body Mind Centering/Infant Developmental Movement practices.I feel this workshop is deeply aligned with Third Root's vision of a world where "we all belong, we are all healing, and we are all welcome in our wholeness".I believe it is profoundly healing to connect with our own vulnerability in the company of others who are also struggling, through movement and meditation (I know it has been for me).I think these experiences can begin to lead us to a more integrated and "whole" sense of ourselves, perhaps not in spite of but even because of the pain we may be experiencing, as we start to take care of our hurts and our reactions to them with compassion, rather than fix, shame, and blame them, or push them away.I wish to share this work in a spacious, supportive, and lighthearted way, over the course of 2 re-occurring workshops, to give folks a chance to deepen into the material if they'd like to, and for us to explore multiple entry points.

A hot stone massage combines thermotherapy with massage techniques to provide an effective

healing therapy.  The use of natural stones in conjunction with massage uses powerful earth

energies to help the patient heal.

Heat from stones also has the benefit of geomagnetism from an Earth source; which has a

balancing and healing effect on our systems.

Warm stones encourage the exchange of blood and lymph and provide soothing heat for deep-tissue work. They are also placed on specific points of the body, such as the back, abdomen or

legs during the massage. The localized placement of heat on a particular area increases

circulation of fluids, and can assist in alleviating organ congestion.Other benefits of Hot Stone

Massage can be a great healing for the brain and body by helping quiet anxiety and alleviate

stress, because the heat of stones helps to promote a deeper and focused state of relaxation.

The hot stones have a sedative effect that can relieve chronic pain.Along with the physical

benefits of stone massage there is also a kind of energy work that is involved which calms and

energizes the mind, body & spirit and incorporating something from nature such as stones,

adds a dimension to massage therapy creating a connection to the elements that can be verygrounding.
