Qigong and/or Medical Qigong
with Maria Silen
90 minutes
Qigong (or ch'i kung) is an internal Chinese meditative practice that often uses slowgraceful movements and controlled breathingtechniques to promote the circulation of qi within thehuman body, and enhance a practitioner's overall health. There are alsomany forms of qigong that are done with little or no movement at all, instanding, sitting and supine positions; likewise, not all forms ofqigong use breath control techniques. In its simplest form, the Chinese character for qi, in qigong, canmean air, breath, or "life force". Gong means work, so qigong istherefore the practice of "working" with one's "life force". Medical Qigong targets healing and restoration.  Promotes body healing and prevention of disease.  Benefits: * increase health, prevent disease and decrease pain *strengthen immune system * become more tolerant to stress, morerelaxed and in harmony * increase concentration and performance *more energy and become more alert at work and at leisure *improve sleep Attitudes toward a scientific basis for qigong vary markedly. MostWestern medical practitioners and many practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine,as well as the Chinese government, view qigong as a set of breathing andmovement exercises, with possible benefits to health through stressreduction and exercise. Other practitioners view qigong in more metaphysicalterms, claiming that qi can be felt as a vibration or electricalcurrent and physically circulated through channels called meridians. Many testify to areduction or elimination of pain through the use of qigong.
